2018-2019 Bright Future Scholarship Recipient: Lucy Holland
We want to congratulate our 2nd Bright Future Scholarship recipient, Lucy Holland.
Here’s a little about Lucy:
Department Environmental and Sustainability Studies
What interested you in this department? Growing up with two entrepreneurial parents, I was exposed at an early age to the fast paced world of clothing, fashion, and most importantly, environmentalism. Throughout the years of watching and aiding them with their organic clothing company while vacillating between two countries as we moved from place to place, I began to understand the truth of environmental action and its complicated, controversial nature. Hence, during my highschool career it was no surprise to hear me adamantly debate with english, biology, and especially environmental science teachers about the ethics and importance of environmental science in today’s world. My passion in this interdisciplinary and overarching science has lead me to pursue a career along its banks, one that will let me help shape the environmental future. My parents, their company, as well as my teachers all propelled me towards the academic route to achieve these dreams, to lend and mend as much as I can to a cause I have always felt so adamantly about.
How will receiving this scholarship benefit you? Attending a university I can excel in has always been an invaluable part of the dream I had for my secondary education. With meager funds and a complicated academic history due to my families constant travel, I feared that my dream would remain just that. However, through my acceptance into the University of Utah, and my award of the Bright Futures Foundation Scholarship, I have come to understand that enrolling in a university I can thrive in and being part of a community that encourages me to use all of my talents to pursue a goal of my choosing is no longer a dream, but a palpable reality.
About Lucy My passions, like my origins, are many. I have always found solace in art, music, and even writing. Having a somewhat fragmented reality throughout my adolescence of moving countries, cultures, languages and homes I found my passions to be the perfect way to channel my frustration and sadness into something creative and inspiring. In my senior year in a new school, I worked hard to revive a much needed LGBTQ+ club and society, beating the path for my peers and eventual successors, in order to establish something beneficial and lasting, something I would have appreciated during my time in highschool. The connections I have made during my education so far have led me to excel and gain a further understanding of the importance of communication and human interaction. Creating a safe space, leaving a legacy, all have no impact on a world without people to reap its benefits. Leaving my highschool, there for my first year and my last, I was honored to leave some aspect behind that I knew could benefit students following in my shadow. I can only hope to continue to make some similar impact in the next chapter of my academic career.
