Scholarship Recipient: Jasmine Garcia
Congratulations Jasmine for being one of this years scholarship recipients!
Here’s a little about Jasmine:
What interested you in your program?
I became interested in the Geology and Geophysics program since I attended Salt Lake Community College during Fall semester of 2016. After transferring to the University of Utah in Fall semester of 2018, I wanted to pursue more than conducting research and analyzing samples collected during fieldwork as I became interested in using environmental geoscience to address environmental issues facing communities in Utah today. I decided to join the Environmental and Sustainability Studies program last year (Spring semester of 2019) because I wanted to learn how I could apply the knowledge gained from my Environmental Geoscience major into address environmental problems while benefiting the livelihoods of communities that are disproportionally impacted by water pollution.
How will receiving this scholarship benefit you?
The Bright Future Foundation scholarship will be benefiting me for two reasons. My first reason is that I will have enough funds to fully cover college expenses, which will ease financial insecurities for the next academic year as I am currently facing such insecurities due to the COVID-19 crisis. My second reason is that I will use the remaining funds to create a community-based project that is focused on addressing water quality issues in marginalized communities in the Salt Lake valley. I would like to say that I have been able to pursue a higher education due to the financial aid I have been receiving for the past four years, including scholarships. I am grateful that I will be given the opportunity to continue finishing college.
Tell us about yourself
I am a first-generation Latina college student who came to Utah in 2006 from San Bernardino, California. I am a fourth-year college student with a double major in Environmental Geoscience and Environmental and Sustainability Studies. I declared two majors due to the similarity between the two in the courses I was taking during the last academic year. In finding the similarity between the two, I wanted to join environmental geoscience and sustainability work when addressing water quality issues in marginalized communities I will be collaborating with. Therefore, my ultimate career goal is to apply the knowledge and experience gained from both majors towards addressing environmental injustice surrounding water pollution in marginalized communities.
